Councilmember's Bio:
Robert Stokes is a lifelong resident of East Baltimore. A graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar Senior High School, he briefly attended Morgan State University to pursue a degree in Business Administration and Computer Science. Robert began his career in public service in 1984 as campaign coordinator for former City Councilman Edwin Johnson. Robert was also the 45th Legislative District co-campaign coordinator for former Mayor Kurt Schmoke.
In 1988, Robert was appointed as a Mayor's Representative in the Schmoke Administration and began the Oliver School Based Asthma Program in four elementary schools (Harford Heights, Johnston Square, Madison Square and Dr. Bernard Harris School), while overseeing constituent services.
In 1998, as Liaison to City Council President Lawrence Bell, Robert spearheaded several community-based initiatives with service providers demonstrating his keen sensitivity to resident needs. These programs - Christmas in April and Civic Works - were designed to address shortfalls faced by many seniors and disadvantaged residents.
Adding to his rich and varied public service experience, Robert was elected to the Maryland Democratic State Central Committee and served four 3-year terms. Prior to his recent election to City Council, he convened a group of several community associations to form the Unified Neighborhoods Coalition, all while serving as council assistant to Councilman Carl Stokes.
Robert is humbled by the honor to serve all residents of the 12th District and will always live up to his campaign promise, "I work for you!"
