Council President Mosby applauds Congressional delegation for their work to reverse our country history of inequity in infrastructure

“The work our Congressional delegation is doing to reverse our country’s history of inequity in infrastructure is critical to Baltimore’s success,” City Council President Nick J. Mosby said.

“Today, I stood with federal, state and local partners at the ‘Highway to Nowhere’ site. Over five decades ago, this was the place where the government came to take my family’s home, one of 900 homes and businesses that were cleared to build a road to make it easier for suburbanites to get in and out of Baltimore quickly. This project did more than just take our home, it also destroyed the protective bonds of our community and stripped my family — like so many other Black families — of generational wealth.

“A once vibrant community, this area, now two generations later, sits as an empty wasteland and a reminder of the legacy of structural racism we are still working to overcome. This highway was a mistake that decimated this community. It is the consequence of decisions made without equity at the core.

“I have great confidence in Senators Van Hollen and Cardin and Congressmen Mfume, Sarbanes and Brown to work with the Biden administration to direct key investment to our beloved city from the American Jobs Plan and other legislation, including the Reconnecting Communities Act.”
