Council President's Statement on Violent Saturday in Baltimore

Council President Scott Expresses Concern in Wake of  Baltimore's Most Violent Day of 2020

BALTIMORE, MD (January 12, 2020) — Council President Brandon M. Scott released the following statement on yesterday's violence:

"A day that should have been met with pride and community was once again flooded with violence and loss. Due to the senseless violence that occured throughout our city yesterday, there are five people who are no longer with us who should be. Today, there are five families who are suffering from the grief and trauma of losing a loved one. This trauma does not get buried with the victims. It extends to the survivors, families, and communities who are left to cope with the aftermath and pick up the pieces. This violence is heartbreaking and must stop now.

In regard to yesterday’s violence, I will be questioning the Police Commissioner and other agency heads about what they were doing in the communities impacted prior to and in the aftermath of the shootings. I will also continue to press BPD and our agencies about how they will adjust their strategies and plans to ensure Baltimore doesn't continue down this path of violence. 2020 does not have to wreak the same havoc as 2019. I will not allow it."

— Council President Scott
