Council President Young to partner with Baltimore area youth on environmental service project
BALTIMORE, MD – City Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young will partner Friday with Maryland Youth Partners in Change (MYPIC) for an environmentally-themed service project.
The MYPIC program focusses on leadership development and community service. As part of a three-year, service learning initiative under MYPIC, students from Booker T. Washington Middle School for the Arts in Baltimore City have teamed up with their peers from the Glenelg Country School in Ellicott City.
The three dozen students will learn about the Healthy Harbor Initiative from its stakeholders and to present the students’ perspective on the Healthy Harbor initiative to members of the Baltimore City Council.
“These students are committed to improving the impact we have on our environment and to cleaning up our City,” Council President Young said. “I am excited to see their presentations and I am inspired by their dedication to service.”
Friday afternoon, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., the students will build and install a trash boom at the Middle Branch Boat House next to the Patapsco River in Baltimore City. The students will be guided by staffers with the Canoe and Scoop program of the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks.
The role of the trash boom is to limit the spread of trash, plastic, and debris by containing it in a specific area. The boom will help keep our steams and harbor clean of debris and direct trash toward one of the four trash wheels currently serving Baltimore City.
After the instillation of the trash boom, starting at around 2:30 p.m., the students will travel to City Hall where they will brief members of the Baltimore City Council on the Healthy Harbor initiative.
