Council President Young to Honor Sen. Mikulski’s Historic Role in U.S. Senate
BALTIMORE, MD – City Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young and members of the Council will honor their former colleague, U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, during a luncheon Monday at Baltimore’s City Hall.
Sen. Mikulski, a true trailblazer who holds the distinction of being the longest-serving woman in U.S. Congressional history, recently became the first woman and first Marylander to chair the Senate’s prestigious Appropriations Committee.
Sen. Mikulski will be honored as part of national Women’s History Month for her distinguished service during a special luncheon at City Hall that will be attended by colleagues who served with her on the City Council during the early to mid-1970s.
“The members of the City Council, citizens of Baltimore and people of Maryland are all proud to have Sen. Mikulski continue to serve as our advocate and friend,” City Council President Young said. “We are very excited to welcome our senator home to the chamber where her illustrious career in public service began.”
Sen. Mikulski said she has used her experience on the Baltimore City Council to help guide her distinguished career in Washington.
“I’m humbled by this honor from my long-time friends and colleagues on the Baltimore City Council,” Sen. Mikulski said. “Though I left the City Council for elected office in Washington, I did not leave behind the lessons I learned there. They have guided me in representing our city and our state in the House and Senate. Every day when I come home to Baltimore, I am recommitted to looking out for the day-to-day needs of Marylanders and the long-range needs of the nation.”
