Council President's Statement on Major Gas Explosion in Northwest Baltimore
"During this time of uncertainty, the only thing that matters is the safety and wellbeing of our neighbors."
BALTIMORE, MD (Monday, August 10, 2020) — Baltimore City Council President Brandon M. Scott released the following statement following the major gas explosion in Northwest Baltimore:
"This morning’s explosion was absolutely devastating. The tragedy hit close to home as I received a call from my mother who works nearby in the Reisterstown Plaza. She heard the blast from her job.
Although this is still a very active scene, we do know that there was a major gas explosion, which resulted in the collapse of three homes in Northwest Baltimore. So far, one person has died, four people have been transported to the hospital, and Search and Rescue units are actively working to rescue one person.
The brave men and women of the Fire Department have been working with the Police Department, the Department of Housing and Community Development, and the Red Cross to ensure the rescue of those impacted, and the safety of those in the surrounding area. I want to thank not only our Baltimore City first responders, but also Baltimore County for their support during this tragedy.
My heart and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the residents of this community. During this time of uncertainty, the only thing that matters is the safety and wellbeing of our neighbors. I will continue to provide updates as they come in."
