Council President Scott's Response to President Trump's Statement on Baltimore
Council President Scott's Response to President Trump's Statement on Baltimore
BALTIMORE, MD (July 27, 2019) — Baltimore is a great American City. Yes we face significant challenges like our counterparts across the country, but we are committed to making Baltimore the best city it can be. No one more than Congressman Elijah Cummings, who undoubtedly has been and continues to be a hero across Baltimore for his selfless, tireless work on behalf of Baltimore.
It should be beneath the dignity of the President of the United States to insult an entire City in a weak attempt to score points against a political rival. We should not lose sight of the fact that Mr. Trump is clearly threatened by Congressman Cummings’s vigorous oversight of his countless misdeeds.
Nor should we lose sight of the fact that Mr. Trump - as President - is in a real position to help Baltimore address some of our most pressing needs. He should be focused on how he can help Baltimore reach it's limitless potential. If the President is interested in real action beyond tweets, Baltimore has a list of action items for him. He can help Baltimore rebuild infrastructure, creating jobs and careers for those who desperately need them. He could restore federal funding to support affordable housing. He could help us address the desperate need for lead abatement across the City.
But of course Mr. Trump is not interested in real action. He is an embarrassment to our city, state and country. We will continue on without his help. And because we are Baltimore, we won’t be discouraged.
