Council President’s Statement on mayor’s last-minute decision to restore funding for youth programs  

BALTIMORE, MD – “I would like to thank Mayor Rawlings-Blake for supporting the City Council’s push to continue investments in Baltimore’s youth by agreeing to restore $4.2 million in proposed cuts to programs that serve thousands of children throughout our city.

While the Mayor’s focus has been on protecting the City’s fiscal health, members of the city council have worked tirelessly to advance the opportunities available to our most vulnerable citizens; the children of Baltimore. 

For weeks, Budget Chairwoman Helen L. Holton and I have worked closely with Baltimore’s Finance Department to identify savings in the mayor’s budget that would help restore millions to keep more than 3,000 children enrolled in enriching afterschool and out-of-school-time programs.

With today’s announcement, the mayor has stepped forward to join our fight to keep our children engaged in productive and positive activities.

While we applaud the mayor’s decision to restore funding to these vital programs, we would like to offer a reminder that three additional programs remain on the chopping block: Experience Corps., Cooperative Extension and the Waverly and Northwood Before and Aftercare Centers. We would like to ask the mayor and her administration to continue working with the Council to identify additional budget savings that would allow our young people to continue to benefit from these essential services.”
