Council President Brandon M. Scott Issues Statement on This Morning's
Officer-Involved Shooting on the 2100 Block of Maryland Avenue

"This morning, Baltimore Police Department officers were called to a methadone clinic on the 2100 block of Maryland Avenue. Upon their arrival, they were informed that shots had been fired, making it an active shooter situation.

Sergeant Billy Shiflett attempted to de-escalate the situation with the suspect, but was shot in the process. Sgt. Shiflett was courageously pulled to safety by Officer Christopher Miller. He is currently in stable condition. Two individuals were killed in the incident: the suspect and another individual who was found during the investigation. An employee of the treatment clinic was also shot and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

My heart is with Sgt. Shiflett and the clinic employee as they recover in the hospital after surgery. I thank the officers for their courage in responding to the situation. This was dangerous for all involved. My prayers are also with the loved ones of those who were impacted by this incident.

This morning's events highlight the heroism of Sgt. Shiflett and his fellow officers, while again reminding us of the severe problem of gun violence in our city. It’s imperative that we deal with the flow of illegal guns into our city. As Council President, I’m committed to taking action on this issue during my tenure in office."
